Coat
of Arms Animals of the 9. SFltl
The
Flotilla was formed on 01. 04.1943. The commander of the flotilla was
Kptlt. Götz Freiherr von Mirbach.
Since
the flotilla had no own boats the training was carried out in the Baltic
with boats of the School-Flotilla. Six new boats planned for the 9. Sfltl
were sold to Spain.
The
boats carried the coat of arms of the 9. SFltl on the quarterdeck on both
sides under the scull-bridge. The coat of arms of the boat was displayed
on either side of the scull-bridge.
According
to the eight animals as intarsia on the smoker's table of Oblt.z.S. Günter
Rabe (S 130) the boats carried owl, raven, sea-lion, ape, bear, scorpio,
bat and shark as coat of arms. The other symbols are standing for
the medical service, the communications service, and the engineering
service of the flotilla. James Foster Tent writes in his „E-Boat
Alert“, that Oblt.z.S. Rabe
(S 130) had the raven, Oblt.z.S. Schirren (S 145) teh sea lion and
Oblt.z.S. Behr (S 150) the bear as coat of arms. He also writes that the
flotilla had the animals owl, ape and scorpio as coat of arms. Bat and
shark are not mentioned.
